Research in Computer Architecture

Computer architecture encompasses the structure, organization, implementation, and performance of the basic building blocks of computer systems. Research in computer architecture in the department focuses on the following basic issues:

• How should we design multicore systems that are easier to program?
• What will be the structure and organization of future computers?
• What are the limits to performance on current machines?
• How do we remove the limits to performance?
• What is the impact of both hardware and software technology?
• How do we evaluate the performance of systems?
• How do make systems more reliable?

Our current research in computer architecture covers a wide range of topics, from the microarchitecture level to the overall system level. Several of these projects are performed in collaboration with researchers in VLSI, Operating Systems, and Compilers. A sample of research projects is described below.
